House votes to block EPA as Senate talks climate change

A group of Senators from the Democratic caucus are pulling an all-nighter to discuss climate change the night of March 10, meanwhile the House of Representatives voted March 6 to block the EPA's regulations for new and existing coal-fired power plants.

Representatives voted 229 to 183 to block EPA regulations of the power generation sector in a bill called the Electricity Security and Affordability Act (H.R. 38-26). The White House has stated it would veto the bill should the Senate approve it.

The proposed legislation calls for emissions standards to be based on proven and currently available technology. It also calls for Congress to set an effective date for EPA rules related to existing plants.

Members of the Senate's Climate Action Task Force (formed in January) are getting together to talk about climate change. This "talkathon" is supposed to go on all night, but technically is not a filibuster because it will not advance or block any particular legislation.

Renewable energy and tax policies to support them are expected to be a talking point, as is strengthening state-level renewable energy portfolio standards.
