Scottish Power to boost capacity at hydro plant

Scottish Power is looking to double its pumped-storage hydro capacity at the 440 MW Cruachan hydropower facility near Oban, Scotland.

Iberdrola-owned Scottish Power said while there is no timeline for the project, workers at the facility could pump water to a mountain reservoir to use as a form of energy storage to be called upon when demand for electric power is high.

Scotland has set a goal of deriving all its power from renewable sources of power generation by 2020.
