Americans for Prosperity, a political action group headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, encouraging the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to press Ernest Moniz, President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of energy, on his opinion on a carbon tax

According to the group, Moniz gave an interview where he said a carbon tax would double, or even triple the cost of energy to consumers.

"The Senate has a job to do exploring this nominee's views on such a pivotal issue to American families and businesses," said AFP President Tim Phillips.  "It's clear that a carbon tax would drive up energy costs, hurt families' budgets and hobble our still-fragile economy.  The American people deserve to have the Senate press this nominee on why he would possibly want to inflict that sort of harm on the public."

A recent report by the National Association of Manufacturers found that a carbon tax would hurt workers' incomes by 8.5 percent, reduce output in the energy-intensive manufacturing sectors by 15 percent and reduce GDP growth by 3.6 percent.

"The Obama administration's position on a carbon tax has been called into question lately with reports that the Treasury Department has more than 7,000 emails discussing a carbon tax," according to the group. "The addition of Ernest Moniz to Obama's cabinet could be a signal the president intends to advance the tax."
