As part of an energy efficiency initiative, Dayton Power & Light is joining utilities throughout the state to kick off Ohio's Oldest Refrigerator Contest. The winning customer gets a $1,250 prize for the state's most ancient refrigerator or freezer.

To enter the contest, Dayton Power & Light customers have to sign up to have their refrigerator or freezer picked up for free and recycled.

The Dayton Power & Light customer with the oldest refrigerator recycled during the contest will win $250, and will compete for the title of Ohio's Oldest Refrigerator and another $1,000 award. The winner will be announced in August.

All customers who unplug and recycle an old, working refrigerator or freezer will earn a $35 incentive and can save up to $150 a year in energy costs. Dayton Power & Light's recycling program and the $35 incentive is available year-round.

DPL's other units include DPL Energy LLC and DPL Energy Resources Inc., which also does business as DP&L Energy. The Dayton Power and Light Co., a regulated electric utility, provides service to over 500,000 retail customers in West Central Ohio; DPLE engages in the operation of merchant peaking generation facilities; and DPLER is a competitive retail electric supplier.

DPL, through its units, owns and operates about 3,800 MW of generation capacity, of which 2,800 MW are coal-fired units and 1,000 MW are natural gas and diesel peaking units. DPL Inc. was acquired by The AES Corp. (AES) in 2011.
