Alliant Energy switches on 100 MW wind farm in Iowa

Franklin County Wind LLC, a non-regulated unit of Alliant Energy Corp., has begun commercial operation of the Franklin County Wind Farm located in Franklin County, Iowa.

The Franklin County Wind Farm consists of 60 wind turbines capable of producing nearly 100 MW of emissions-free, renewable wind energy. That's enough energy to power about 25,000 homes. The final project cost is about $235 million, excluding any capitalized interest costs.

Franklin County Wind LLC continues to seek a buyer for the energy produced by the wind farm, but in the meantime it will sell the power it generates into the MISO market.

Alliant Energy currently expects to elect the government cash grant option for the project. The grant is an incentive available from the U.S. Department of Treasury that offsets a portion of the cost of facilities placed into service before the end of 2012.

Alliant Energy Corp., headquartered in Madison, Wis., provides regulated electric and natural gas service to more than one million electric and 414,000 natural gas customers in more than 1,300 communities across Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Interstate Power and Light Co. and Wisconsin Power and Light Co. are Alliant Energy's two public utility subsidiaries.
