Orlando. Fla., June 4, 2012 — Southern Co. won the 85th Annual EEI Edison Award for the company's efforts in leading the nuclear renaissance. Also, AES Gener was named the international recipient of the Edison Award, for distinguished leadership, innovation and contribution to the advancement of the electric industry for the benefit of all.

According to EEI, Southern Co. made immense progress toward building two new reactors at the site of Georgia Power's Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 by successfully obtaining the first combined construction and operating license in the U.S. in more than three decades.

AES Gener was recognized with the International Edison Award for announcing the early completion of construction and initiation of commercial operations of the 545 MW (gross) Angamos coal-fired power plant in northern Chile. It is the third time in the last 6 years that an AES Corp. unit has received this award.

The Angamos plant is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world. Its need was facilitated by a decline in natural gas supplies to the region at the same time that demand for reliable baseload generation was increasing for local mining activities.

Construction of the plant presented many challenges, such as the application of new technologies and an aggressive construction timeline, but was completed ahead of schedule and used award-winning financing.
