APPA applauds NRC approval of new nuclear power licenses

April 2, 2012 – The American Public Power Association commended the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's historic decision to approve construction of the 2nd new nuclear reactor project in decades.

The V.C. Summer plant, located in South Carolina, is jointly owned by South Carolina Electric & Gas and the state-owned electric utility Santee Cooper. Santee Cooper is a member of APPA.

"The NRC should be commended for their decision to approve these new nuclear units," said Mark Crisson, President and CEO of APPA. "At a time when stringent environmental regulations are adversely impacting the existing industry capacity, this approval sends a strong message of support for the development of new, clean nuclear power to help meet our nation's growing energy needs."

Crisson also pointed out the role of public power's consistently strong credit rating, which enabled the owners of the plant to obtain the financing necessary for the construction and operation of the new units.

The two new advanced-design AP1000 reactors continues the expansion of the U.S. nuclear fleet and follows the NRC's announcement in February approving two new nuclear units at the Vogtle Electric Generating plant, jointly owned by Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities. MEAG is also a member of APPA. The project will be one of the largest in South Carolina history and will create thousands of jobs in the state.
