Pocket Gas Detectors
KWJ Engineering has introduced a series of pocket gas detectors. Features include a single button allowing users to turn on/off, view dosimetry, log events and access backlight and the ability to calculate and record dosimetry: MAX, time of MAX, 8-HR TWA, total-exposure in ppm-hrs. PRO models can data log up to 12 times per minute, or 100 hours at one per minute. When alarm thresholds are exceeded, the detector sounds a loud alarm, vibrates, flashes LED and illuminates the display.

Ultrahigh-voltage Switchgear
ABB has commissioned switchgear rated to handle more than one million volts (1,100kV). The ultrahigh-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) has a switching capability of 6,900 MW, which means it can turn power equivalent to the average electrical consumption of Switzerland, a country with more than 7 million inhabitants, on or off within milliseconds. ABB successfully designed, tested and commissioned the GIS for a pilot project launched in 2006 by State Grid Corporation of China to demonstrate the feasibility of AC power transmission at ultrahigh voltage. The GIS is a central component of ultrahigh-voltage electricity transmission designed to carry huge amounts of electricity over vast distances with very low losses. ABB completed the assignment in just two years with technology partner Xian Shiky, a leading Chinese switchgear manufacturer who worked in close co-operation with ABB throughout the project.

Safety Publications
The Power Tool Institute (PTI) now offers downloadable PDFs of its major publications on its recently revised Web site at www.powertoolinstitute.com. “Safety Is Specific,” available in both English and Spanish, is PTI’s compilation of rules and safe practices for power tools. “A Teacher’s Reference Guide to Power Tool Safety” is PTI’s 24-page brochure featuring lesson plans, student activities, quizzes, support materials, and references to additional information on each power tool category in “Safety Is Specific.” All publications are available in hard copy and may be ordered at no charge on the PTI site.

Portable Meter
AEMC has introduced the 5000V Megohmmeter Model 6505, a portable metering instrument housed in a rugged field case that operates on either battery or line power. It performs voltage, insulation, and capacitance measurements. Insulation resistances up to
10,000 GΩ (10T) can be measured test voltages from 40 to 5100 can be selected. Features include automatic calculation and presentation of the Dielectric Absorption Ratio and Polarization Index. The Model 6505 displays the test voltage, insulation resistance and the leakage current during the test. Capacitance of the sample and discharge voltage present at the test leads is displayed at the conclusion of the test.
The Model 6505 incorporates test inhibit capabilities which will not allow test voltages to be generated if a live sample is detected. The test terminals are recessed to ensure operating safety.
