FirstEnergy Nuclear submits license renewal application for Davis Besse

Akron, Ohio, August 30, 2010 — FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co., a unit of FirstEnergy Corp. submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for renewal of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station operating license.

The 908-MW nuclear power plant located in Oak Harbor, Ohio, is licensed to operate until 2017. If approved, license renewal would extend operations for an additional 20 years, until 2037.

During the review process, the NRC will conduct several on-site audits of the plant's structures and components.

In addition, an environmental survey will be conducted to ensure that continued plant operations have no adverse impact on local surroundings.

Davis-Besse began operations in 1977 and is part of FENOC, which also operates the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio, and the Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.

Operating licenses for Beaver Valley Unit 1 and Unit 2 were renewed by the NRC in November 2009, extending operations until 2036 and 2047, respectively.
