ConEd & Northeast Utilities to merge:

Consolidated Edison Inc. plans to buy competitor Northeast Utilities for about $3.5 billion in cash and stock, creating one of the largest electric companies in the nation. Company officials said the merger could save $1.5 billion in operating expenses over 10 years.
