Glendale Water & Power completes Itron smart meter installation

Liberty Lake, Wash., September 28, 2011 — Glendale Water & Power, based in southern California, finished deploying an Itron solution in support of its smart metering project in September 2011.

GWP was the first utility in the nation to apply for and acquire Department of Energy American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funding, and it is also one of the first to put those funds fully in to use. The project will help Glendale residents better monitor and understand their energy and water usage, and will aid GWP in promoting conservation efforts.

GWP's smart metering project covers its service territory of 120,000 customers and includes Itron smart electricity meters, smart water communication modules, a meter data management system, leak detection technology and customer-facing web portals.

The Itron solution is already operating and communicating with back-end systems at the utility. Data collected by the system will soon be used in a pilot program to display consumption information on digital picture frames inside customers' homes.
