Customers in the e-business equation

More and more utilities are realizing the Web can help them acquire and retain customers and manage their business more effectively and efficiently. The electric power industry has learned from deregulation of the airline, long-distance telephone and local phone service industries-customer service is winning value proposition.

CRM best developed as an ecosystem

Companies are increasingly turning to customer relationship management (CRM) as a strategy to attract and retain customers. Unfortunately, most are taking a fragmented approach that will ultimately result in loss of revenue, decreased customer lifetime value, and a decreased ability to sell, according to analysts at META Group Inc. The IT research and advisory services firm warns IT managers that CRM must be developed as an "ecosystem," combining operational, analytical and collaborative technol

E-commerce takes back seat for smaller companies

When choice honeymoon ends, service quality sparks long-term customer relationship

For the first time in the industry`s history, utilities must worry about competition. Newcomers must break the utilities` strong hold on the marketplace, and there`s no predicting what happens next.

Info. Technology

Activities-based management helps utility measure profitability

Until recently, utilities have not identified cost management as a critical factor to future success. While cost management clearly contributes to the success of any business, regulated or unregulated, current economic forces driven by emerging regulatory changes have raised cost management in the electric power industry to a level of paramount importance.

Y2K liability specter prompts need for alternative mediation process

Executives should cringe at the thought that electric utilities` year 2000 (Y2K) readiness might be judged by the "prudence" standard previously applied to nuclear power plants and other large construction projects under the regulatory microscope of state public utility commissions. The popular press, utility financial analysts, and legal pundits worry about a possible tidal wave of litigation relating to Y2K disputes. The predicted tidal wave, however, may only amount to a trickle if advocates

IT worker shortage reaches critical levels

This spring, thousands of students graduated from high schools across the country. If a majority of those students decided to train for information technology (IT) jobs, they would still not fill all the positions available today, much less the positions that will be available in another four years.

AMR and new business opportunities-not an oxymoron

New business opportunities enabled by AMR networks have been a subject of intense debate and marketing hype with little demonstrated success. The additional revenues from new services have been perceived as a critical component of the justification for an AMR network deployment since in many situations the prior business case did not demonstrate the economic merits of AMR. And yet, few success stories are known in the industry.

Utility of The Month

To the Editor:

I always look forward to reading Electric Light & Power, but must take exception to your "Occidental Suicide" Commentary (July 1999) that "The modern world is extinguishing traditional cultures" and that "the greater good will be served if Oxy operates its Colombian license."

Dear Mr. Burr:

I was very impressed with the accuracy of your coverage of the Columbia situation in your Commentary entitled "Occidental Suicide". The "three U.S. activists" you mentioned are named Lahe`ena`e Gay, Ingrid Washinawatok and Terence Freitas. I am the mother of Terence Freitas.

DONT IGNORE YOUR HUNCHES

Most people have had the experience of having made a mistake and realized that "something" had warned them of trouble ahead.

Industry News

Outages prompt lawsuits, dismissals at major utilities

A day care center received a phone call from the building superintendent, advi- sing the center that within minutes the building`s electricity would be cut off. No estimate was given for the length of the blackout. Facing the prospect of several dozen frightened children stuck inside unlit, unventilated rooms, the administrator and staff herded the kids out onto a strip of lawn separating the building from Chicago traffic. There they waited until their parents could pick them up.

Federal restructuring plans wilt under summer heat waves

Federal deregulation of electricity has created a perpetual stalemate in Congress. Despite media reports of signs of momentum on Capitol Hill, Congress continues to falter when faced with restructuring legislation. The lack of federal presence in restructuring, combined with the active restructuring role undertaken by states, has left Congress grasping for suitable compromise legislation.
