GE Hitachi, Exelon to explore nuclear energy opportunities in Saudi Arabia

Sponsored by

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Exelon Nuclear Partners to discuss the feasibility of collaborating on future nuclear power projects in Saudi Arabia. The country is planning to add 17.6 GW of nuclear power generation by 2032 to diversify its domestic energy supplies.

Exelon Nuclear Partners is a division of Exelon Generation LLC, the largest nuclear fleet operator in the U.S. with 18 reactors at 11 stations. Exelon Nuclear Partners works with companies around the world to develop and operate low-carbon nuclear power plants.

The new MOU calls for GEH and Exelon Nuclear Partners to explore the feasibility of providing Saudi Arabia with GEH’s advanced BWR technology, engineering, procurement and project management expertise, combined with Exelon’s services.

King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE), the organization overseeing Saudi Arabia’s nuclear energy program, plans to build up to 16 nuclear reactors over the next 20 years, and is evaluating several light water reactor designs, including GEH’s Generation III+ Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) and Generation III Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) models.

The 1,500 MW ESBWR is GEH’s newest design and offers passive safety systems and the ability to cool with no operator intervention, on-site or off-site power for more than seven days.
