Power outages hit half million after East Coast storms

Nearly 500,000 utility customers are without electric power following a series of severe weather outbreaks along the Atlantic coast. Utilities and state authorities are instructing residents of the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland and other states to prepare for power outages lasting several days.

Customers in Duke Energy's service territory caught some of the worst of the storms, with about 240,000 customers without power in North and South Carolina. Duke Energy officials warned some of their customers to expect the power outages to last a few days.

The massive storm formed in the Great Lakes region before sweeping through the Mid-Atlantic June 13, slamming into Washington, D.C. during rush hour. Two deaths have been blamed on the storm, according to reports.

Pepco Holdings reported some 38,900 without power in their Washington, D.C. metro service area. Dominion reported about 92,200 without power in Virginia and North Carolina.

American Electric Power's Appalachian Power reported about 74,800 power outages in Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia. AEP's Indiana Michigan Power reported about 10,800 without power in Michigan. AEP Ohio reported 3,700 outages in its service territory.

AEP has requested the help of some 450 mutual assistance crew workers to help with storm clean-up and service restoration in their affected areas.

Southern Co.'s Georgia Power reported nearly 60,000 customers without power. FirstEnergy West Virginia said about 4,500 of its customers are without power. Baltimore Gas & Electric, owned by Exelon Corp., reported 1,800 without power in Maryland.
