Perry Nuclear Power Plant returns to service after planned outage

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. (FENOC), a unit of FirstEnergy Corp., said its Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio, returned to service May 16, 2013 following a March 18, 2013, deactivation for refueling and maintenance.

The 1,268 MW power plant is currently operating at 21 percent power. Power generation levels will vary over the next several days as part of routine testing. The plant is expected to reach full power in the next several days.

During the outage, 280 of the 748 fuel assemblies were exchanged. Numerous inspections and maintenance and improvement projects were completed to ensure continued safe and reliable operations, including replacement of Perry's three low-pressure nuclear power turbines. The new, nearly 175-ton turbine rotors feature an enhanced blade design that is expected to enhance safety and reliability and increase plant efficiency.

Prior to the outage, Perry operated following the completion of its last refueling in spring 2011, generating more than 17.9 million MWh of carbon-free electricity.

FirstEnergy's FENOC unit also operates the Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport, Pa., and the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.
