Shaw, Westinghouse applaud NRC's approval of V.C. Summer Nuclear Station license

Baton Rouge, La. and Pittsburgh, March 30, 2012 — The Shaw Group and Westinghouse Electric Co. both released statements on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's combined operating license approval for two new AP1000 nuclear power units at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville, S.C.

"Shaw congratulates SCE&G for achieving the latest step forward in providing new nuclear power generation in the United States," said J.M. Bernhard Jr., Shaw's chairman, president and CEO.

"We are honored to be part of the team to deliver the world's most advanced, emission-free power plant to V.C. Summer," said Bernhard. "This landmark project will provide numerous benefits for South Carolina and will create thousands of jobs. Shaw anticipates hiring approximately 3,500 employees during construction of the new units at V.C. Summer, with thousands of more jobs created as a result of construction and operation of the reactors."

The license for V.C. Summer was issued by the NRC under an improved process that combines the construction permit and operating license for a nuclear power plant. By combining the construction permit and operating license, the new licensing method provides greater regulatory efficiency and increases the predictability of the process.

Aris Candris, president and CEO of Westinghouse said, "Today, as I end my professional career and tenure as president and CEO of Westinghouse Electric Co., I applaud the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's decision to grant South Carolina Electric & Gas a combined construction and operating license. I join with Westinghouse employees around the world in congratulating SCE&G on receiving its COL for two new AP1000 units at its VC Summer site. Now, a workforce of thousands can fully begin safety-related construction on the new units and South Carolinians can look forward to a new generation of safe, clean and reliable baseload electricity.

"Thirty-seven years ago when I started my career in the nuclear industry, I truly believed then, as much as I do now, that nuclear energy must play a major role in supplying the baseload electricity that will contribute to sustainable, global economic growth. With COLs now in place for two U.S. utilities to build four AP1000 units, it is a clear affirmation that nuclear energy will continue to play an important role in the energy mix of this country, now and in the future. Further, it solidifies the AP1000 design's foundational role as the preeminent technology of choice in the United States and around the world.

"Westinghouse looks forward to working with South Carolina Electric & Gas, Southern Nuclear and our consortium partner Shaw in continuing to make the nuclear renaissance an absolute reality here in the States."

Shaw and Westinghouse are building four new nuclear units in the U.S., with two units each at V.C. Summer and Southern Co.'s Plant Vogtle, and with two more units under contract for Progress Energy in Florida. The COL for Plant Vogtle was approved by the NRC in February 2012.

These projects represent the first contracts awarded in nearly 30 years for new nuclear builds. Shaw also is providing engineering, procurement, commissioning, information management and project management services for four AP1000 nuclear units currently under construction in China.
